How to Calculate the Value of Gold Jewelry

December 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fashion Jewelry, Gold Jewelry Tips, Jewelry, Jewelry fashion, Online Shopping

In today’s gold market, it’s important to know exactly how much gold is worth, whether you are buying or selling. This article will demonstrate how to figure out the value of gold items, from 24k to 8k to everything in between.

(1) First, know the conversion. Gold is typically measured in troy ounces, and: 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams (many simply go with 32 grams)

(2) Next, know the current price of gold, which can easily be found on most stock websites, in the newspaper, or at midwestrefineries.com

(3) Convert the current price of gold to grams. If the current price of gold is approximately 1117 per troy ounce, then: 1117/31.1034768 = 35.91 for 1 gram of 24k
If you choose to use 32 instead of the long decimal, then: 1117/32 = 34.91 (if using this number in the calculations below, simply assume that your gold is worth just a little bit more)

(4) Now you will need to know the different prices of 14k, 10k, and so on. For 14k, simply take 24 and divide it by 14. For 10k, do the same thing, so:
24/14 = 1.71429
24/10 = 2.4

(5)Take these numbers, and divide the price of 1 gram of 24k (in this case, 35.91) by each of them to find the value of 1 gram of 14k and 1 gram of 10k, like this:
35.91/1.71429 = $20.95 for 1 gram 14k
35.91/2.4 = $14.96 for 1 gram 10k
Simply follow the same formula for 12k, 18k, etc.

(6)Weigh any gold that you have to find out its weight in grams (or ounces, if you have that much). Take this number, let’s say 1.8 grams of 14k, and multiply it by the appropriate price for 14k (in this case, 20.95):
1.8 * 20.95 = $37.71
You have $37.71 of gold.

* Note that the price of gold is always changing, so what you calculate one minute is only an approximation. If you intend to sell or buy gold, make sure that your calculation is as up-to-date as possible.

The Best Way To Sell Old Jewelry

December 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Gold Jewelry Tips, Jewelry, Jewelry fashion, Old Fashion Jewelry

Old jewelry pieces are special accessories that hold precious memories to people and special events. Sometimes, people wont think twice before they sell these prized possessions. Personal attachment is one thing but necessity is another and more important. In times of need, you must choose between what is right and what is needed to make ends meet.

Life is unpredictable and this is one of the factors that make people desperate when living gets hard. Selling old jewelry is not uncommon and many people sell their unwanted jewels in times of great need in order to get by. The only thing that we can do is find a good store that will buy these jems for a good price. Memories hold little value to jewelry stores, therefore only the gem and stone count as the value of the product.

Selling and buying jewelry are two different things. You can not sell old jewelry and expect to get the exact same price as when you bought it. It doesn’t work that way, but you can always find other ways to shorten that gap. Knowing how to effectively sell these accessories can make the difference in earning the most profit or getting nothing at all.

Find a good Appraiser

The prices of jewelry are based on its composition. Gold and diamond accessories are measured in karat and other gems are measured the same ways also. Get an unbiased appraisal from someone that knows the value of your gems. If you can get the general price of each accessory then that would give you an advantage when the time comes for you to sell old jewelry.

Finding A Good Store
Don’t go to a pawnshop and just settle for what they say, instead shop around first. Pawnshops are the worst when it comes to appraisals, especially when you are desperate for cash. Your best option is to go to a jewelry store and have your jewelry professionally checked, since these stores have the equipment to appraise your accessories. This also means that jewelry stores are the ideal place to start when you want to sell your old jewelry.

Online Shops

After checking all the jewelry stores and you’re still not satisfied with their appraisals, then you can also check online shops to buy your jewelry from you. The latest technology has made it possible to sell old jewelry online. Online stores provide people from all over the world the comfort of selling their jewelry with just a few clicks of a button. Finding a good shop can be a hard thing to do sometimes though. The safest way is to check their site for responses and other comments made by people who had previously sold their products to that particular store.

These stores provide a secure package system on where to place your jewelry. The pieces are sent back to them for appraisal and a check will be sent to you after a few days. It is also one of the fastest and effective ways to sell old jewelry.

How to Repair Your Old Broken Fashion Jewelry

August 13, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Gold Jewelry Tips, Old Fashion Jewelry

Like most fashion jewelry lovers you probably have some old seemingly worn out rings, necklaces, or bracelets shoved to the back of your drawer or jewelry box that never get worn. The great thing about inexpensive costume jewelry is that it is easy to get your moneys worth out of it. However, why not get even more bank for your buck by breathing new life into those old jewelry pieces by reversing some of their most common issues:

Problem 1: Dirty or Tarnished?

Cleaning fashion jewelry is simple but choose your cleaner wisely. Only use a jewelry cleaner that specifically states that it is safe for costume jewelry and read the ingredients to make sure that it does not contain alcohol, acids, or ammonia because these can strip the gold or silver plate. Use a children soft bristle tooth brush for cleaning around costume jewelry stones. Its probably not be a good idea to immerse rhinestone jewelry because the stones can become unglued.

If your fashion jewelry items are only lightly tarnished a good buffing with a soft dry jewelry cloth may do the trick. For more heavily tarnished items a jewelry polish can work wonders.

Problem 2: Worn out gold or silver plating?

Because typical fashion jewelry plating is very thin it can eventually rub off from wear or become damaged from the use of harsh chemicals, creams, or perfumes. If this happens there are several options in gold and silver re-plating solutions that can be found online. Some are fairly simple and can be performed without the use of heat or electricity while others are a little more complex. I found one website in particular that offers a very good variety of plating options (e.g. immersion plating, pen plating) and general plating instructions for precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and rhodium.  Click on the contents and search box and then plating gateway. One word of caution: I would recommend buying only cyanide free plating solutions as cyanide is poisonous. For silver lovers there is one product that I have personally used that has worked well for me and it is called Silver Brite. This is an all in one cream that cleans, polishes, and re-plates worn silver on jewelry and other items. It is very easy to use and fairly inexpensive. Just rub the cream on with an applicator sponge or a Q-tip for small items and rub off with the buffing cloth that is included with the kit. The result is a clean, sparking silver finish.

Problem 3: Loose or missing stones?

If a stone such as a cubic zirconia, plastic, or glass has become loose or fallen out a drop or two of super glue will do the trick. Just be careful not to use too much. You don’t want the glue oozing out of the sides and causing the piece to adhere to your skin or some other object. Most of the time a single drop will suffice unless it is a very large stone in which case you may want to use two drops. If you cannot find the missing stone there are companies online that sell loose cz stones if you have a particular chain or ring band you want to salvage. Simply do an internet search for cz stones.

Problem 4: Broken clasp?

If your fashion necklace or bracelet has a broken clasp make sure it is the actual clasp that is broken. The problem may be a broken jump ring which is a tiny metal ring that is open in one spot which connects the clasp to the chain. If this is the problem it can be easily fixed. First identify what kind of clasp it is (e.g. lobster clasp which is shaped like a lobster claw and has a tiny spring loaded lever, a magnetic clasp which is just as it sounds, or a spring ring which is also spring loaded) then visit your local craft store or do a search online for jewelry clasps and you should find what you need. If the clasp is soldered on you will need to contact a jewelry repair professional.

Problem 5: Out of date:

If you simply want to add a new flair to your old fashion jewelry pieces you can simply mix and match. If you have a special pendant that you are especially fond of give it a new life with a more contemporary chain. Add new charms to your favorite bracelet or re-plate that old silver necklace with a shiny new gold finish. Be creative!

Buy Gold Jewelry Tips

May 29, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Gold Jewelry Tips

Throughout history, gold has been one of mankind’s most valued substances. It has been used as currency and in some cultures even eaten to cure diseases such as tuberculosis. It also has been symbolic of wealth, power and luck. The sun-colored substance is durable, pure and most importantly, beautiful. Today it remains still a popular metal used in fine jewelry production. If you are in the market for a piece of jewelry for yourself or for a loved one, here are some shopping tips.

Know the occasion and the style

Whether you are buying a gift, there is usually an occasion involved, whether it is a holiday, an upcoming formal event, or a celebration of achievement. If you are planning to buy for someone else, know what you really desire to express, but also know what the other person might be expecting you to express. Take some time to research the various types of the same. For example, yellow gold is traditional and can be symbolic of enduring love, often given for a 50 year wedding anniversary. Colored pieces might be considered less romantic and a more appropriate symbol for a mother, daughter or sister.

Then take some time to observe your loved one. What type of jewelry do they most wear; bracelets, necklaces, earrings? Do they wear large, bold pieces or is their style delicate and understated? While the warm tones of yellow gold compliment many skin tones, the cool, contemporary look of white gold is currently trendy. Fortunately for those in doubt, two-tone styles that combine both white and yellow are also very popular.

If you are shopping for yourself, you will have to balance your needs with what you are actually attracted to. It might be difficult to stay focused but knowing your own goals will help. Are you looking for a high-quality classic piece that will be a wardrobe staple or for a fun, accessory that will compliment a particular outfit? Also take some time to consider your personality and lifestyle as well as your body type in order to select a piece that you will feel and look good in.

Shop around

Make sure that the shop’s gold pieces are marked with the karat age and the name or the U.S. registered trademark of the company that will stand behind the given mark. The trademark may be in the form of a name, symbol or also initials. Also ask about the store’s refund and return policy before you buy.
